The GM(genetically modified) genocide
Thousands of Indian farmers are committing suicide after using genetically modified crops. When Prince Charles claimed thousands of Indian farmers were killing themselves after using GM crops, he was branded a scaremonger. In fact, as this chilling dispatch reveals, it's even WORSE than he feared.

Institute for Responsible Technology
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are the result of laboratory processes which artificially insert foreign genes into the DNA of food crops or animals. Those genes may come from bacteria, viruses, insects, animals or even humans. Although banned by food manufacturers in Europe and elsewhere, the FDA does not require any safety evaluations. Most Americans say they would not eat GMOs if labeled, but the U.S. does not require labeling. GMOs are not safe, but have been in the food supply since 1996 and are now present in the vast majority of processed foods in the US.

Consilience: The Unity of Knowledge (Hardcover) – Edward O. Wilson

The biologist Edward O. Wilson is a rare scientist: having over a long career made signal contributions to population genetics, evolutionary biology, entomology, and ethology, he has also steeped himself in philosophy, the humanities, and the social sciences. The result of his lifelong, wide-ranging investigations is Consilience (the word means "a jumping together," in this case of the many branches of human knowledge), a wonderfully broad study that encourages scholars to bridge the many gaps that yawn between and within the cultures of science and the arts. No such gaps should exist, Wilson maintains, for the sciences, humanities, and arts have a common goal: to give understanding a purpose, to lend to us all "a conviction, far deeper than a mere working proposition, that the world is orderly and can be explained by a small number of natural laws."

In making his synthetic argument, Wilson examines the ways (rightly and wrongly) in which science is done, puzzles over the postmodernist debates now sweeping academia, and proposes thought-provoking ideas about religion and human nature. He turns to the great evolutionary biologists and the scholars of the Enlightenment for case studies of science properly conducted, considers the life cycles of ants and mountain lions, and presses, again and again, for rigor and vigor to be brought to bear on our search for meaning. The time is right, he suggests, for us to understand more fully that quest for knowledge, for "Homo sapiens, the first truly free species, is about to decommission natural selection, the force that made us.... Soon we must look deep within ourselves and decide what we wish to become." Wilson's wisdom, eloquently expressed in the pages of this grand and lively summing-up, will be of much help in that search.

Why Men Don't Listen and Women Can't Read Maps – Allan and Barbara Pease

Ever wonder why women can brush their teeth while walking and talking on various subjects while men generally find this very difficult to do? Why 99 % of all patents are registered by men? Why stressed women talk? Why so many husbands hate shopping? According to Barbara and Allan Pease, science now confirms that "the way our brains are wired and the hormones pulsing through our bodies are the two factors that largely dictate, long before we are born, how we will think and behave. Our instincts are simply our genes determining how our bodies will behave in given sets of circumstances." That's right: socialization, politics, or upbringing aside, men and women have profound brain differences and are intrinsically inclined to act in distinct–and consequently frustrating–ways.

The premises behind Why Men Don't Listen and Women Can't Read Maps is that all too often, these differences get in the way of fulfilling relationships and that understanding our basic urges can lead to greater self-awareness and improved relations between the sexes. The Peases spent three years researching their book–traveling the globe, talking to experts, and studying the cutting-edge research of ethnologists, psychologists, biologists, and neuroscientists–yet their work does not read a bit like "hard science." In fact, the authors go to considerable lengths to point out that their book is intended to be funny, interesting, and easy to read; in short, this is a book whose primary purpose is to talk about "average men and women, that is, how most men and women behave most of the time, in most situations, and for most of the past."

The Female Brain – Louann Brizendine

This comprehensive new look at the hormonal roller coaster that rules women's lives down to the cellular level, "a user's guide to new research about the female brain and the neurobehavioral systems that make us women," offers a trove of information, as well as some stunning insights. Though referenced like a work of research, Brizedine's writing style is fully accessible.

Brizendine provides a fascinating look at the life cycle of the female brain from birth ("baby girls will connect emotionally in ways that baby boys don't") to birthing ("Motherhood changes you because it literally alters a woman's brain-structurally, functionally, and in many ways, irreversibly") to menopause (when "the female brain is nowhere near ready to retire") and beyond. At the same time, Brizedine is not above reviewing the basics: "We may think we're a lot more sophisticated than Fred or Wilma Flintstone, but our basic mental outlook and equipment are the same." While this book will be of interest to anyone who wonders why men and women are so different, it will be particularly useful for women and parents of girls.

Woven Stories: Andean Textiles and Rituals (Hardcover) – Andrea M. Heckman

The Quechua people of southern Peru are both agriculturalists and herders who maintain large herds of alpacas and llamas. But they are also weavers, and it is through weaving that their cultural traditions are passed down over the generations. Owing to the region’s isolation, the textile symbols, forms of clothing, and technical processes remain strongly linked to the people’s environment and their ancestors. Heckman’s photographs convey the warmth and vitality of the Quechua people and illustrate how the land is intricately woven into their lives and their beliefs.

Quechua weavers in the mountainous regions near Cuzco, Peru, produce certain textile forms and designs not found elsewhere in the Andes. Their textiles are a legacy of their Andean ancestors. Andrea Heckman has devoted more than twenty years to documenting and analyzing the ways Andean beliefs persist over time in visual symbols embedded in textiles and portrayed in rituals. Her primary focus is the area around the sacred peak of Ausangate, in southern Peru, some eighty-five miles southeast of the former Inca capital of Cuzco.

The core of this book is an ethnographic account of the textiles and their place in daily life that considers how the form and content of Quechua patterns and designs pass stories down and preserve traditions as well as how the ritual use of textiles sustain a sense of community and a connection to the past. Heckman concludes by assessing the influences of the global economy on indigenous Quechua, who maintain their own worldview within the larger fabric of twentieth-century cultural values and hence have survived everything from Latin American militarism to a tidal wave of post-modern change.Go top

Consciously Creating Circumstances (Paperback) – George Winslow Plummer

When talking to your subjective mind, remember one thing above all. Do not attempt to tell it its own business, which is the means of carrying out your order. It knows far more than you can possibly know. It manipulates forces that you cannot even dream of. -from "Impressing Your Desire" If you can dream it, you can achieve it. That mantra of the modern self-help movement may have seen its earliest expression in this slender little book "full of metaphysical dynamite." First published in 1935, this is a guide to personal and financial success, filtered through the contemporary alchemical philosophy of the Christian mystics order of the Rosicrucians, which decrees that there are hidden natural powers in all of us. But be warned! The author admonishes us that the power you may unleash via this unassuming volume is so overwhelming that it must only be used for good. American businessman and writer Dr. George Winslow Plummer (1876-1944) founded the Society of Rosicrucians in America in 1909. He also wrote The Art of Rosicrucian Healing, Principle and Practices for Rosicrucians, and The Science of Death.

EpiGenetics
Watercress. Blueberries. Pomegranates. Few plant products have escaped being labeled as a ‘superfood’ in recent months. While scientific evidence points firmly towards the health benefits of a diet rich in fruit and veg, we’re only just starting to understand how specific molecules in our food can influence our health. As the media bombards us with the latest results on the cancer-fighting, brain-boosting or heart-healing properties of everything from garlic to grapes, there’s also some fascinating research to suggest that what we eat might also have epigenetic effects.

Healing and the Mind – Bill Moyers

In this intriguing companion volume to a PBS TV series, Moyers explores the roles of thoughts and emotions in illness and health through interviews with 16 doctors and scientists. He visits stress-reduction clinics and a cancer patients' support group, and he investigates the new field of psychoneuroimmunology, which emphasizes the importance of patients' attitudes to optimal immune-system functioning. He also travels to China to study acupuncture, therapeutic massage and Qigong, the manipulation of vital energy to ameliorate chronic neurologic and muscular diseases. Among those interviewed are University of California physician Dean Ornish, who has reversed heart disease in patients with treatments combining meditation, stress-reduction exercises, group therapy, walking and vegetarian diet; neurobiologist David Felten, discoverer of nerve fibers that link the nervous system to the immune system; and Thomas Delbanco of Harvard Medical School who seeks ways to transform the doctor-patient relationship so that patients are more actively involved. Color and black-and-white reproductions of art by Kathe Kollwitz, Rene Magritte, Norman Rockwell, Paul Klee and others interact suggestively with the text.top

Life Food Recipe Book: Living on Life Force – Annie Padden Jubb

This is the basics of live food recipes and how-to’s for fasting. You will learn from this book unique ways of working with specific ailments through live food. Research emphasizes that the top 15 "dis-ease" patterns in the United States are the result of poor nutrition. This is shocking information for a country that is seemingly abundant; however, the truth of that research is we eat TOO much of the "WRONG" types of foods. We are a nation whose population is currently both obese and dis-ease prone. Our society simply cannot continue these unhealthy habits.

Life force foods are those found wild in nature and served uncooked. A life force diet is vegetarian, and mainly vegan, congruent with the philosophy that good food choices promote a sustainable future on the planet. This book applies life food principles to daily life. The authors explain how the LifeFood diet can strengthen the mind and body, and show how to make lotions, tinctures, and potions with food. With illustrations throughout and over 150 easy to follow recipes to maximize health and well being, this book features such dishes as Aztec Quiche, Emerald Broccoli Soup, Spicy Ginger Tofu, and Pina Colada Cookies.

Mission Success – Og Mandino

Anything by Og Mandino is worth reading. They are written in story format with a lesson that is not preachy. This book is about success and how one man overcame so many obstacles to his success. Inspirational and precious.

Teachers of writing will tell you to write what you know. This book, centered around a bombadier's experiences in WWII, was written by a man who served as a bombadier in WWII, Og Mandino. It is designed to help you to learn from the experiences of people "in high places" who have gone before...some of the greatest philosophers, self-help teachers, and religious leaders. It is written in an unassuming method that will demand your attention, and can be read by almost anyone in just a few hours' time, but will deliver information and ideas that will take you a lifetime to fully realize how important they are.

Oh, The Places You’ll Go – Dr. Seuss

Nearly every business person in school should read this. It is about how to get where you’re going and bumps along the way. The bumps make you stronger and you get to the good stuff anyway.

Inspirational yet honest, and always rhythmically rollicking, Oh, the Places You'll Go! is a perfect sendoff for children, 1 to 100, entering any new phase of their lives. Kindergartners, graduate students, newlyweds, newly employeds--all will glean shiny pearls of wisdom about the big, bountiful future. The incomparable Dr. Seuss rejoices in the potential everyone has to fulfill their wildest dreams: "You'll be on your way up! / You'll be seeing great sights! / You'll join the high fliers / who soar to high heights." At the same time, he won't delude the starry-eyed upstart about the pitfalls of life: "You can get all hung up / in a prickle-ly perch. / And your gang will fly on. / You'll be left in a Lurch."

But fear not! Dr. Seuss, with his inimitable illustrations and exhilarating rhymes, is convinced ("98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed") that success is imminent. As long as you remember "to be dexterous and deft. And NEVER mix up your right foot with your left," things should work out. (All ages) --Emilie Coulter

Other Powers – Barbara Goldsmith

A fascinating read that is about the life of Vistoria Woodhull, the first woman to run for president of the U.S. Her antics and abilities and how she became a confident and advisor to some of the world’s wealthiest.

In Other Powers Barbara Goldsmith takes a wide-ranging approach to the life of controversial feminist Victoria Woodhull (1838-1927). Goldsmith places her buccaneering subject within the context of 19th-century America's fascination with spiritualism, which enabled an accomplished medium like Woodhull to escape her impoverished origins and amass considerable wealth. Goldsmith also ably delineates the freewheeling Woodhull's uneasy relations with more respectable ladies in the women's suffrage movement and portrays the hatred of sexual hypocrisy that ultimately brought Woodhull's relentless enemies who wrecked her public career. History illuminates biography―and vice versa―in this boundary-defying work.Go top

Power vs. Force – David R. Hawkins, M.D., Ph.D.

The new science of Kinesiology ushered in a powerful diagnostic tool called "muscle testing". (Muscle testing is a simple procedure for testing strong/weak responses, such as that of an outstretched arm, in response to questioning). Despite the revolutionary nature of these discoveries, most people are willing to rationalize that something other than the "conscious mind" is at play, something whose function it is to oversee the well-being of the individual and manage the body's myriad complex subsystems. It could then be extrapolated that this benign functionality - "subconscious mind", "field" or whatever - would be willing to communicate with the "outside world" when matters regarding the well-being of its charge were concerned.

Dr. Hawkins, however, has taken a quantum leap with the idea of muscle testing. Rather than simply regarding the field or subconscious mind as the governing mechanism of the individual's body, he applied muscle testing in the context of traditional metaphysical paradigms stating that all things are connected, that all events, actions, thoughts and emotions are written into the unlimited Database of Consciousness, and that as participants in this universe, we all have access to that Database. Thus through muscle testing we have the ability to get the answer to any question we can formulate (except pertaining to the future, which has not yet been written into the record). The implications of this are staggering. Did aliens put a face on Mars? Is the government telling the truth about thus-and-such? We now have the means for direct knowledge.

Most authors would be content to base an entire book solely on these revelations, but surprisingly this is merely the groundwork laid out by Dr. Hawkins for the rest of the book! Based on thousands of studies using these methods, striving for 100% repeatability on the tests, he explains many aspects of human experience including a Scale of Consciousness. Based on a logarithmic scale of 1 to 1000, all ideas, emotions, concepts, thoughts, works of art, literature and science, resonate at some level. Above the level of 200 these energies are considered nurturing, positive and "good" (Power). Below 200 are energies that are destructive, negative and "evil" (Force).

Dr. Hawkins explores how "attractor" energies (mathematics from chaos theory) influence art, science, medicine and sports and examines the specific mechanisms leading to health and disease. He examines the quality of our institutions and discusses the nature of Consciousness and the path to Enlightenment. All concepts are presented with exceptional clarity and lucidity, without any sign of pedantry. Finally, as the title of the book suggests, one may attain a quantitative understanding of the difference between Power and Force.

This book is an absolute must for anyone searching for a better understanding of "how reality works".top

Art of Living Epictetus & Sharon Lebell

The Art of Living is a great compilation of wisdom as it was once expressed by Epictetus and has been presented by Sharon Lebell. I use this book for various purposes: to read when I need inspiration; to be confronted with the simple wisdom that is captured in daily occurrences, and as material to guide my students in management courses at various levels toward enhanced acceptance, understanding, and respect for life and the living.

The first cognitive-behavioral therapist, so to speak, was the philosopher Epictetus (50-120 AD). His most important ideas have stood the test of 1,900 years astonishingly well. To paraphrase some excerpts from his Handbook, especially Sharon Lobell's new edition ....

Control:

He said that happiness and freedom begin with a clear understanding of this principle: some things are within our control, and some things are not. It is only after we have accepted this fundamental rule, and learned to distinguish between what we can and cannot control, that inner tranquillity and outer effectiveness become possible.

This is a cardinal principle of today's cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), as well as the basis of AA's famous "Serenity Prayer." Further CBT principles foreshadowed by Epictetus....

Where trouble comes from:

Things themselves don't hurt or hinder us. Neither do other people. How we view things and people is a different matter. Strange as it may seem at first, it is our own attitudes and reactions that give us the most trouble. We cannot always choose our external circumstances, but we can always choose how we respond to them.

Legislating for the world:

Circumstances do not arise to meet our desires or expectations. Events happen as they do. People behave according to their own inclinations and what they are faced with - which we may not even be aware of. Don't try to make your own rules that the world is supposed to follow. That is a recipe for frustration. Exercise what influence you can, then accept what you actually get and make the most of it.

Habits:

We are creatures of habit, reacting automatically to events as they happen. It thus matters greatly what our habits are. They are mostly a matter of practice. The oftener we do something, and the more circumstances in which we do it, the more it becomes a habit. Therefore, to make something a habit, do it. To make something not a habit, don't do it. To change a habit, do something else instead.top

Good work, Eppy! You were WAY ahead of your time.

The Tao of Detox: The Secrets of Yang-Sheng Dao –  Daniel Reid

This manual suggests a raft of Eastern therapeutic techniques for those suffering from anxiety, lack of sleep, poor nutrition, and general unhappiness, all of which Reid traces to "toxic waste" polluting the body, a problem common to the "Western lifestyle." Some of the advice is grounded and practical: the author urges massage, Tai Chi, deep breathing and a sensible diet in a revolving plan of "periodic detox" and "rational retox."

Bill Porter (aka Red Pine), author of Road to Heaven, translator of Lao-tzu’s Tao Te Ching : “Anyone who has grown up in the overfed, over-drugged West will want to keep this book handy.”

Chungliang Al Huang, author of Embrace Tiger, Return to Mountain : “Of all the current experts and practitioners writing about traditional Chinese medicine, Daniel Reid is unique in his balanced methods of blending the East and the West. This is a timely book.”

Zhongxian Wu, author of Vital Breath of the Dao : “In this well-written book, Daniel Reid shares with us his heartfelt purification techniques, from ancient Chinese life science to modern science. I recommend this book to those who are on their path of health and well being.”

The HeartMath Solution – Doc Lew Childre

Is the heart the missing link in the mind-body connection? By combining age-old philosophy with modern science, Childre and Martin respectively the founder and an executive consultant of the California nonprofit research organization, Institute of HeartMath make a compelling case for the idea that good health is really a triumph of heart, not mind, over matter. Citing the Institute's research on the heart's role in human health, they demonstrate that the so-called metaphorical condition of the heart which has long been associated with love, wisdom, courage and happiness may play as important a role in mental well-being as its physical function. The HeartMath solution lies in developing what Childre and Martin call the core heart feelings (such as love, forgiveness, appreciation and care), which trigger physiological responses resulting in less stress, better brain function and a stronger immune system. Although this book is about the heart, it's written with cool intelligence and intelligibility for the head.
